the not so endless summer of home

making ALL the new friends and being super normal. An ex-marine, a PE teacher slash rugby player slash crossfit star, a documentary film-maker coming from the front-lines of Ukraine, a gorgeous gay farmer from Oklahoma, a Barbie-looking tv producer from... Continue Reading →

Utah – it’s Famtastic.

When you’re almost forty, sometimes it feels weird explaining the branches where your family tree split as a child and why you are posting pictures with gorgeous young men while hiking in exotic locations (if only because I get questions... Continue Reading →

Nine Shocks of Culture

if you know you know Whenever I come back to California, what I consider home-home, people always ask me what’s different. To say “just about everything” would be a cop-out, and not exactly true. I’ve lived abroad for almost a... Continue Reading →

16-18: AITA??, goodbyes, being Auntie Rachie.

The one where I realize I am a bit of an asshole.  In which I arrange for an "end of the year" staff photo, and arrive late. https://open.spotify.com/episode/7zmfKHWI1eZEs1t8UKpqL2?si=e56412885d464dd4 You might know the thread on Reddit (a popular online forum for... Continue Reading →

Big Q, Round 2

Last summer, the two weeks quarantine upon arrival were in my apartment, which was hard for a laundry list of reasons, but I gotta hand it to the HK gov’t - they know how to make things much, MUCH harder! Luckily (I guess), after a year of going nowhere, even with the mandated hotel quarantine, I was desperate to get home so I took the plunge. more new normals.

my work from home situation. not pictured - leggings on the bottom. Current status: spent the day wandering an island and now feeling the “singles tax” of getting a sunburn in the places my arms couldn’t reach on my shoulders... Continue Reading →

Life in the Time of Corona

It’s already tomorrow in Hong Kong, so hello from the future. This is Week 10 of Coronalife. Yes - it's been so long, we don't count days anymore, my sweet summer child. But I’m finally on a very anti-climatic Spring Break!

twenty20

Ah, New Year’s Eve; we meet again. The most anti-climatic of holidays. I have spent you in some pretty awesome ways - drinking on the streets in Hong Kong, singing in a piano bar on a ship in Antarctica, jumping... Continue Reading →

700 days in HK

totally mesmerized by this sunrise as we landed in SFO To celebrate my 700th day of living in Hong Kong, I left! I hadn't been home to California since last summer and I felt it in my bones. The last... Continue Reading →

Ticket Mishaps, Sunsets, Thai-ing the Knot

high school besties! One of the hardest things about living abroad is missing big moments in the lives of people you love. Conveniently, one of my high school BFFS decided to have a destination wedding in Thailand over Christmas, which... Continue Reading →

r2hk: clockenflap, turkey, water buffaloes

I also thought I was standing next to a celebrity, and then after a few minutes realized it was just someone I follow on instagram. But by far, the strangest part of the weekend involved feces.
